3. unique; not known, seen, or experienced before

A Story of What Came Before

WHY STRANGE FELLOWS?

As expectant parents often struggle to find the perfect name for their unborn child, Aaron and Iain laboured to come up with a suitable name for their fledgling brewery. Finally, after months of hashing over lists of names, unable to agree upon a single one, someone declared that they were "just like the odd couple". The rest as they say is history.

From its inception, Strange Fellows has been about a blending of ideas and histories with a common vision: that two strangers can have a beer together, look each other in the eye and toast each other's good health.

"Under the warm, inclusive umbrella that is the enjoyment of a very fine pint, Strange Fellows seeks to unify its corner of the world, one beer at a time. Patrons from all walks, each with a distinct and valuable story just waiting to flow into the communal conversation, congregate in a space where difference is part of the fabric of the operation and is not just celebrated, but encouraged. The familiar and the strange coexist here, figuratively, as we have described, but literally too, in the line-up of available brews." - Chris Dagenais, East Van Foodie

While Strange Fellows is known for sour and barrel-aged beers, we also brew a broad range of styles, from hoppy and sessionable ales and stouts of all strengths, to traditional Belgians, crisp and classic pilsners, and seasonal fruit beers.

Our brewers' fondness for experimentation and diverse techniques and ingredients is evident in our barrel programme that produces unique limites releases sour, blended and vintage beers.

CHARLES CLARK GALLERY // Join us for Carole Mathys CHARLES CLARK GALLERY // Join us for Carole Mathys' latest exhibit, where the body speaks what words cannot. Through layers of acrylic and oil, Carole captures the fragility and raw emotion that our hands, feet, and subtle gestures reveal.

We also invite you to Carole's artist reception on September 14th—hope to see you there!

ARTIST STATEMENT:
We commonly rely on body language and facial expressions to recognize emotion. I find myself drawn to the body, the hands, the feet. They tell of a state of mind, expressive, but in an involuntary and honest way.

Inspired by the fragility and translucency of skin, I use acrylic and oil on canvas to build thin layers of paint that expose the delicate temporality of an individual, as well as echoing the vulnerability of the inner self.

Using bright, bold colors, overlapping multiple poses of the same figure creates moments in time that examine how the body conveys difficult emotional experiences. Blocking out and concealing segments of the figure’s face and body draws attention to the more subtle yet revealing gestures.

BEHIND THE LABEL - BELDAME // Crossing paths with BEHIND THE LABEL - BELDAME // Crossing paths with a crone is believed unlucky by some. Stooped and toothless, she’s a frightful specter of mortality. But those who meet her gaze and recognize the wisdom she holds have nothing to fear—though beware to those who scorn or overlook her.

As the Mother of Creation, her power can be both nurturing and fearsome, bringing nightmares, illness, or a failed harvest. So next time you happen upon an old woman, pour her a glass of this bright and refreshing beer, look her in the eye, and toast to her good health.

BELDAME is a classic German-style Pilsner, bright, clean, and fresh, with a bracing and refreshing bitterness, and the unmistakable herbal, earthy character of Noble Hallertau hops.
