We are happy to have works by Mat Holmstrom hanging in the gallery this month. Intriguing figures engraved into wood or paper via the technique know as pyrography. Pyrography – meaning “writing with fire” – is the art of decorating wood or other materials with burn marks via specialized pyrographic tools, or more rustically via a metal implement heated in a fire.
“This collection, presented on Birch, Maple and paper, is a mix of playful character illustrations and conceptual pieces. Created within the first two years of my move to Vancouver from Beaumont, Alberta, these pieces show some of the simple and integral techniques that have been brought forward into my current work.” – MH
